A little about the Region of Peel

The Region of Peel is a large urban community situated in the Greater Toronto Area. It is made up of three municipalities: the City of Mississauga, the City of Brampton and the Town of Caledon. The region has a population of almost 1 million. Peel has 38% visible minority and 45% foreign born population. It is one the fastest growing regions in Canada. For more information on the region of Peel:

The Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse (PCAWA - www.pcawa.org) and The Peel Committee on Sexual Assault (PCSA - www.sexualassault-peel.com) are the co-applicants for the pilot site for the WICI initiative.

Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse (PCAWA) is a collaborative of over 30 member agencies in the Region of Peel that are directly involved, or concerned with, the issue of woman abuse. These agencies work together to promote a more effective and coordinated response to woman abuse in the Region of Peel. Agency representation includes, but is not limited to, legal, education, social service, settlement and health sectors. The Region of Peel is also represented on the membership.

The Peel Committee on Sexual Assault (PCSA) is a program of Trillium Health Centre's, Women's and Children's Health . Trillium Health Centre is Peel's Regional Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Treatment Centre. PCSA is a group of concerned individuals and service providers working collaboratively to establish a comprehensive and effective community response to end sexual violence. This Committee is also represented by a broad agency representation and is working collaboratively with the Region of Peel.

PCAWA and PCSA currently have active members representing the following sectors in the Region of Peel: Education, Hospital, Police, Sexual Assault Centre, Woman's Shelters, Legal and Police Services, Peel Children's Aid, Ontario Works, Peel Housing, Peel Health and Children's and Youth Services.

Some initiatives include:

  • A violence prevention strategy targeting parents and caregivers with children 0-6 years of age. This initiative includes the development and distribution of a resource kit (book & toy blocks), which promotes violence-free play and learning among young children.
  • The distribution of ethno-specific resources ("Creating a Safety Plan") and the promotion of routine screening for woman abuse in health clinic/hospital setting, and to increase awareness of violence against women among health professionals.
  • The Region of Peel: Woman Abuse Protocol: Best Practice Guidelines which seeks to promote a coordinated response system to woman abuse in the Region of Peel. The Protocol has over thirty signatory agencies from the Region of Peel.
  • The Region of Peel's Emergency Response Protocol, which provides best practises and accountability for first responder agencies to sexual assault.
  • Facilitating a more effective, comprehensive referral process within the VAW sector and between VAW agencies and social service agencies in the Region of Peel.

Media Outreach Project

Goal: To increase the community awareness of woman abuse and to facilitate an effective regional response to issues of women's safety.

Objective 1: To increase the communication of consistent and comprehensive messaging about woman abuse in the Region of Peel
Objective 2: To facilitate the involvement of women's organizations in the public policy process and to increase the regional support and resources for VAW services.

The PCSA and PCAWA Joint Advocacy Committee will provide direction and guidance to the media outreach project. The members of this committee represent agencies from both the Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse and Peel Committee on Sexual Assault.

A strategic partnership has been formed with The Region of Peel Police Media Department to assist the Joint Advocacy committee in the delivery of the media outreach project. A representative from the media department will be attending monthly meetings for the duration of the media outreach project and will be a key player in distributing the media tool kits and assisting the access of effective VAW messaging in the media.

This project will build the capacity of the VAW community to effectively engage the local media with effective messaging about woman abuse through the development and implementation of a media tool kit, needs assessment and media outreach training.
